ABOUT US

Textile design is our life’s passion!

Hi, We’re Taya and Joy. We’ve been working together as textile designers ever since we graduated from design school, and we have the grey hairs to prove it. We specialize in high-end custom woven Jacquard upholstery fabrics that are used in the Architecture and Design community – we’re experts in this field.

We’ve had the good luck to spend our entire adult lives closely connected with a very special weaving mill. Our specific passion is bringing together the highly technical part of textile design with the aesthetics and beauty that are so deeply integral to woven fabrics. We move easily inside the textile manufacturing world. We have a masterful knowledge of Jacquard and the ability to create fabrics that are incredibly rich with complex weave structure and sophisticated use of color and weave effects. Our favorite thing is working at the loom with the technicians and together pushing the traditional manufacturing processes to their brink – arriving at the rare and magical place where specialty manufacturing collides with high design, craft and artisanry.

Our newest venture is opening up the world of bespoke textile manufacturing through select collaborations with artists and designers who work in various fields. We collaborate on many types of projects – home furnishings and home accessories, fashion garments and textile accessories, highly specialized contract textiles for use in unique public spaces, Jacquard woven textile fine art pieces. Our collaborations can involve every aspect of the design and development process, from concept through manufacturing and all the way to finished product.

OUR MISSION

With The Weave Lab’s own line of products we’ve given ourselves the challenge of creating every single product using all the leftover quantities of yarn that accumulate in our partner mill’s warehouse. True textile up-cycling. For this reason, each of our products will be made in small batch quantities and will be offered in limited edition colorations. If you see something you like, buy it before it’s gone.

Every custom weaving mill’s challenge is figuring how to avoid accumulating a warehouse full of small leftover quantities of yarns that they can’t use. Custom weavers buy yarn in small quantity dyelots, and our modern manufacturing environment with its requirements for very high-quality standards requires the manufacturer to buy a fresh dyelot of yarn for each production run. Dye houses are not able to easily customize their dyelot sizes, so the weaving mill has no option other than to buy more yarn than they need to fill an order. This formula is one of the biggest explanations for why there are so few custom weaving mills today. It’s too easy to accumulate a warehouse full of hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of dyed yarn that has been paid for, but that unfortunately becomes not “usable” in the mill’s main product offering. The Weave Lab’s goal is to find a solution to this conundrum.
